Editing Services

Free Sample Edit

If you're a new client, you can request a sample edit of a 250-word selection. Simply submit the following information:

  • document type (novel, journal, newsletter, etc.)
  • subject area (fiction, philosophy, etc.)
  • intended audience
  • approximate word count
  • service you require (copyediting, content editing, proofreading, etc.), plus any additional important details regarding your manuscript
  • deadline
  • contact information (your name, email address and phone number)

Submit the above information and your sample in the body of an email message to Editor@FlowingPens.com. I'll edit your sample at no cost and email it back to you as an attached Word document. All submissions will be edited using a Track Changes function unless other arrangements have been made. This means that all changes made to your document will appear as redline text for your review.

Hard Copy Proofreading Service

A hard copy of your manuscript will be line edited in red ink, using proofreader's marks, to correct errors in the rules of standard written English, which include the following:

  • grammar
  • punctuation
  • spelling
  • sentence structure
  • shifts in tone, tense, person and number
  • subject-verb agreement
  • modifier placement
  • parallelism
  • and more...

This service allows you to refer to the corrected hard copy and make the needed changes to a disk copy of your manuscript.

Electronic Copy Proofreading Service

An electronic copy of your manuscript (sent to us as an e-mail attachment) will be edited for errors in the rules of standard written
English (as noted above). This service saves you time because there is no delay for postal mail, and because you will not have to transfer the needed changes yourself from a hard copy to a disk copy. (Add an additional $ .50 cents per page if you wish for us to highlight changes.)

Content/Substantive Editing Service

This edit includes, but goes beyond, proofreading by adding, deleting, or moving small portions of text in order to tighten the prose and add descriptive word choice--while attempting to maintain the author's unique style and tone, as well as characters' appropriate diction and dialect. It includes proper general formatting. (There may be a small additional fee if the work needs extensive formatting changes.)
